SL My Inventory Viewer FAQ

Q: What is SL My Inventory Viewer?
A: SL My Inventory Viewer allows a Second Life (SL) game player to view his/her 'My Inventory' object properties out-world (not logged into SL).  It can not change the player's inventory items because it does not connect with the Second Life interface.  It does read a cache (a temporary file) .inv file on the player's harddrive.  This file normally contains a current list of all of the player's inventory items.
Q: How do I print my Main Log?
A: Click 'Logs' on the menu bar then 'MainLog' > 'Print'

Q: How do I print my current inventory (even after a search)?
A: Click 'Inventory' on the menu bar then 'Send Inventory to Log'. Then, Click 'Logs' on the menu bar then 'MainLog' > 'Print'

Q: Can I import my SLMIV v1.x Image/Attaches Log file?
A: Yes. Copy your old imagelog.txt file into the new 'SL My Inventory v2' Program Files directory (copy of existing). The next time SLMIV 2 starts it will load all of the associations in the imagelog.txt.

Q: Why do I freeze-up when using the SL Connection feature?
A: 1) Your internet connection may not be enabled. 2) This feature works from a third-party piece of code. It needs SL to be installed on the local machine that SLMIV is running on. 3) In all cases, close SLMIV, ensure you have internet connectivity, then try again, You will be forwarded to the 'My Inventory' tab when SLMIV obtains your inworld inventory.

Q:How do I report Bugs?
A: All of the development and source code is now hosted at
http://slmiv.googlecode.com
So all bugs are kept on record there. In SLMIV,
click 'Help' > 'Submit bug/Feature request'
You may need a GMail account to post. Email me and I can
send you a GMail invitation.
Discussion about bugs are also accepted in the Yahoo! Group but they
get transferred over to the GoogleCode site.

Q: How do I use SL My Inventory Viewer?
A: There are three ways to import inventory into SLMIV:
  • Browse to your avatar's .inv file (like version 1.x) (a-below) or .gz cache
  • Connect directly to Second Life using the 'SL Connection' tab
  • Browse to a properly formatted .xml file
After importing an inventory you may use the right-click menu to make entries into a log file so you may use the log file as instructions on what to do when you sign back inworld. You may also associate images and files with any inventory objects.
PLEASE NOTE: In version 2.7 and above, unzipping the .gz file is not necessary

a)
1) Browse to your .inv file. It will be found at this location on your harddrive:
C:\Documents and Settings\LoginName\Application Data\SecondLife\cache\xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx.inv.gz

(if you can not see this location, go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > Show Hidden Files)

2) Unzip the .inv out of your xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx.inv.gz.
The program will NOT read the .inv file while it is in the .zip. You MUST
unzip this file yourself. (Future versions of the program will enable this
or develop an application yourself by downloading the open source.)

3) Run SL My Inventory Viewer and click the browse button.

4) Browse to the location of your unzipped .inv file. It will load the file.

Q: Where do I download the open source?
A: SLMIV Google Code website or older versions may be downloaded for members of the SL My Inventory Yahoo! Group in the 'Files' section.  You may leave the group after downloading, or stay aboard and post your own version.

Q: How does it work?
A: Second Life creates temporary files in a cache folder.  Before Second Life application exits, it compresses a file xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx.inv file contained in a .zip file.  The .inv file is a simple ascii text file with the avatar's My Inventory infomation.  The .inv file does not get uploaded to the SL servers, unless I am mistaken.  It is only used for temporary storage.  All of the avatar's My Inventory is stored on SL servers so don't worry about losing your inventory items.

Q: Why do I want to view My Inventory out-world?
A: For a couple of reasons:
  • To make a list of what items you want to delete.
  • To make a list of what items you want to move.
  • You are developing an object out-world and you need to look at your inventory but you don't want to sign-in.

Q: How do I send SL postcards/images to my flickr.com account so I can link
them to SL My Inventory Viewer?
A: If postcards are not working directly by sending them to your flickr
email (
youraccountname@photos.flickr.com) Please create a slbuzz account,
then simply link your SLBuzz account with flickr and send snapshots to
flickr@slbuzz.com Sign up at http://snapshots.slbuzz.com/crosspost
